I always knew Finn Visser was weird, but I never thought he was a full-blown nutjob. But there you have it. Front row seats to the arsehole having a psychotic break in the basement of his own building.

Jesus Christ. I brush bits of grit off the knees of my trousers. I’m pissed, but I’m also embarrassed. The little prick put me on my knees with a single punch to my gut. It was a slick move – the guy is a ninja, after all – but I should have seen it coming. I should’ve anticipated that shit. I’ve been boxing since high school and know when a guy is going feral, so why didn’t I react faster? It’s not like I couldn’t smell the crazy on him. Or the dominance leaking out of his pores, for that matter.

And I know Finn. Not in any bromance kind of way, but he was hard to miss, even back in uni. He didn’t go out looking for attention, but some guys just attract trouble. And that was Finn. Didn’t matter he flitted around the campus like a ghost most of the time, avoiding everything except for the mandatory classes and events. Someone was always stepping in his path. And while he didn’t flex unless he was challenged, he also never backed down. Watching him take drunk idiots apart – or those wanting to boast about how they put themselves through The Vise – was the stuff of campus legend.

Funny thing is, the guy looks like an emo skater boy with a drumstick up his ass. Doesn’t matter he’s nearly thirty, and he’s the founder of the most successful security business in the country. The guy screams sad boy poet with an untreatable personality disorder.

I should’ve kicked him in the dick…

“Ryan can help heal it, love.”

“Don’t fuss, Griff!” Maddie’s strident tone pulls me out of my arse long enough to catch up with their conversation and remember she’s hurt. In fact, the smell of her blood cuts through the rage in my head and makes my heart sink. But when I catch her gaze, she’s already shaking her head. “I’m okay. Really. I’ll just clean it when we get to the office.”

“Fuck, baby.” I’m back on my bruised knees in a second and shuffling over to her. We’re in one of the limos with bench seats that face each other, but she turns her knees away from me. Doesn’t stop the angry hiss that bursts out of me at the sight of the red, raw flesh. “That little shit! I’ll put his dick in a vise for this.”

Maddie’s eyes go wide, and I shake my head, realising that might sound a little strange out of context. “They called him The Vise at uni. He was a nut-cracking lunatic, even back then.”

“I think he just misread the situation,” Griffin says, like he didn’t just go into scary omega mode five seconds ago. He can fondle his tie pin all he wants, but I saw his eyes shooting silver bullets at Finn.
